Roaches

Cockroaches adapt readily to a variety of environments, but prefer warm conditions found within buildings. Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their feces as well as emitting airborne pheromones for swarming and mating. Other cockroaches will follow these trails to discover sources of food and water, and also discover where other cockroaches are hiding. Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects on the planet. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on limited resources like the glue from the back of postage stamps.

Cockroaches are one of the most commonly noted household pest insects. They feed on human and pet food, and can leave an offensive odor. They can also passively transport microbes on their body surfaces including those that are potentially dangerous to humans, particularly in environments such as hospitals. Cockroaches have been shown to be linked with allergic reactions in humans.

HELPFUL HINTS

General preventive measures against household pests include keeping all food stored away in sealed containers, using garbage cans with tight lids, frequent cleaning in the kitchen, and regular vacuuming. Any water leaks, such as dripping taps, should also be repaired. It is also helpful to seal off any entry points, such as holes around baseboards, in between kitchen cabinets, pipes, doors, and windows with some steel wool or copper mesh and some cement, putty or silicone caulk.

German Roach

German cockroaches are the most common roach that you see in apartment buildings, restaurants, and hotels. They thrive in moist, dark, and warm environments.  You mostly see them at night.  If they are seen during the day, that is a sure sign of a serious infestation. The first step in combating german cockroaches is to keep your house clean and tidy.  That way when you, or a pest control professional, apply chemicals and baits, the roaches will go straight for the bait because there’s no other food source distracting them.

Oriental Roach

These roaches are often referred to as water bugs and black beetles. They are larger roaches that are either very dark brown or black in color. They feed on decaying wood and live in moist areas like drains and around trash cans where rainwater can build up. Although, they are mostly seen outside, they may venture indoors during long periods without rain.   Keeping leaves and mulch from sitting right up against your home’s foundation can help avoid attracting them to your home.

American Roach

American cockroaches are reddish-brown and the biggest of these three main roaches. They can be 1.5 inches or larger.  Adults have wings and can fly but don’t do it very often. Just like other roaches, american cockroaches thrive in warm, moist environments.  They are usually found in sewers and drains, but will come inside homes and restaurants if they can find access. American cockroaches carry bacteria and can cause serious contamination if an infestation is not handled promptly.
